The birthday of ice hockey in Russia and in the SU is generally considered 22 December 1946, when in Moscow, Leningrad, Riga, Kaunas and Arkhangelsk the first matches of the first Championship in ice hockey were played.
In 1954, the Soviet hockey players made their debut at the world Championships and immediately took the leading position in the world hockey. Even the first meeting with Canadians ended with the victory of the Soviet sportsmen – 7:3. This victory broughtthem the first world title. From 1954 to 1991 the team won the «gold» of the world Championships 22 times and became the winners at the winter Olympics7 times.

In the 1990s the lack of stability made many leading players start playing in foreign clubs. Our hockey lost some of its stars, but they became real leaders of different hockey clubs, including the NHL, and thus support the high mark of the Soviet and Russian hockey school.
