The Paralympics mascots

The Paralympic Games have their own lucky charms. They are designed to emphasize the features of the Paralympic sports. The basic qualities of the mascots are similar to the principles of paralympism – the power of the spirit and the will to win.

The WinterParalympic Games of 2002 in Salt Lake City (the USA):
The mascot of the Games became
an otter Otto, an animal commonly found in the ancient mythology of the Native Americans. This choice also had some "environmental" aspect: the otters in this regionhad practically disappeared due to the water pollution and poaching.

But thanks to the popularity of the mascot the situation has been significantly improved.

The Paralympic Winter Games of 2006 in Turin (Italy):
The snowflake Astaire became a mascot of these Games. It symbolizes the spirit of the Paralympic Games, paying more attention to the sports achievements of the competitors, rather than to the obstacles they have to overcome.

The Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver (Canada) in 2010:

Sumi is the Paralympic mascotincluded in the total group of 2010 Games mascots. For the first time the Olympic and the Paralympic mascots were presented simultaneously.

The Ray of Light and the Snowflake are the charms of the Paralympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi .
The Author of the Ray is Natalia Balashova. The Author of the Snowflake is Anna Zhilinskaya.
